Junior School

Curriculum at Mount Erin College in the junior years is focused around relevant and engaging programs which ensure that students develop high levels of academic and social competencies for their later years of schooling. Improving literacy and numeracy levels are an important focus with explicit teaching of these skills. Students are exposed to a variety of different subjects that they can explore to identify their own personal strengths and interests.

Integrated units at specific times throughout the year allow purposeful and practical application of various curriculum areas to be combined so that students get an in depth understanding of how mathematical, english, artistic, scientific, and their other subject concepts are applied and come together in real life.

Year 7

Year 7 curriculum focuses on developing confident, secure students with a sense of belonging, and a keen thirst for knowledge and new skills.

Students spend most of their time in specialised learning areas with a dedicated team of teachers who are highly skilled in their subject areas, and who work together to engage students to develop life long learning skills and understand of the importance of planning and managing their time in order to achieve their personal best.

Year 7 Curriculum Highlights

The ‘I Aspire’ Program

Students in Year 7 are supported by a significant teacher who develops a strong  positive relationship with them through their Home Group teacher role and often is their teacher of other Core subjects such as English, Maths or Humanities.

The HomeGroup teacher also facilitates the ‘I Aspire’ program that aims to promote a smooth transition from primary to secondary school and provides opportunities for students to develop their ASPIRE values in a variety of ways. Some major concepts covered include Supportive Friends, Managing Cyber Relationships, Positive Self-Talk, Growth Mindset Development, Ultimate Study Environment and Self-Reflection and Goal Setting.

Year 7 Events

Mount Erin College welcomes you into secondary school life by providing you with a variety of opportunities to meet and get to know fellow students and staff who you will work with across the year. Together we attend an action packed camp where friendships are formed, discos are danced and challenges are overcome on the giant swing or the in ground trampolines!

Year 7 Timetable

Year 7 students study a program that is timetabled over a fortnight known as a cycle. In one cycle, students will undertake the following subjects:

English Maths Humanities Science
Indonesian Health & PE Art Drama
Technology Food Technology I Aspire

I Aspire Program

Year 8 curriculum focuses on continuing to build on confidence and building interpersonal skills.

Students will work alongside enthusiastic and committed teachers who work hard to engage students in meaningful learning experiences. The Year 8 team work hard to be positive role models encouraging our students to be community minded and strive to achieve our school ASPIRE values.

Year 8 Events

Students in Year 8 at Mount Erin College provides you with a variety of opportunities to extend your learning and understanding of a wide range of topics. From exploring medieval times to creating and running your own business at Market Day. Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of interschool sports extending their team work and leadership skills playing against local schools.

Year 8 Timetable

Year 9

The year 9 curriculum focusses on preparing students for senior school and consolidating skills developed in year 7 and 8. Students are encouraged to develop leadership skills as the leaders of junior school.  Through a range of excursions, incursions and the year 9 program students develop skills they will need in future studies, the workplace and the community.  Pastoral teachers also work with their form groups in the year 9 centre, allowing them to work with students in a very different way.

Year 9 Curriculum Highlights

The Year 9 Program (I Aspire)

The year 9 Centre program allows students to work in a specially designed space with multiple classes and teachers. Students are encouraged to experiment with different learning and presentation styles with great flexibility in topic tasks and approaches.

Students have the chance to work independently and in groups.  Through the tasks they develop skills in time management, organisation , working in teams and managing multiple tasks and deadlines.  Students are required to present their work to parents and members of the Mount Erin community throughout the year, which develops public speaking and communication skills.  Students also work in the community, conducting volunteer work at Village Baxter, Kingsley Park, Wallara and at Mount Erin itself.

Year 9 Events

Year 9 students put on a number of displays of their work.  They also conduct fieldwork in Melbourne CBD as part of City Week, a highlight of the year.  The volunteer work opens students’ eyes to the experiences of people very different from themselves.

Teachers working in the year 9 centre take on the role of an advisor, focussing on providing constructive feedback and support as students explore their chosen topics, rather than telling them what to do.
